What if the truth feels bad to hear?

> “You should apologize!”, they tell me.

“For what?” I ask. How can I apologize if I don’t know what I’m supposed to be sorry for?

> “You made them feel bad!”

But wait a minute. Is it wrong, by definition, to make people feel bad?

No, it isn't. Not always. Not by definition. Because **you can make people feel bad by doing something good.** Like, for instance, by calling them out and telling them the truth about their hypocrisy. That's a good thing.

It is good to confront a hypocrite and to show them their hypocrisy. To tell a person the truth, even when they don't want to hear it, is a positive thing.

And it's also a thing that makes the recipient feel bad.

### Accountability ***always*** feels bad.

So it is possible to make a person feel bad by doing something good. And you should never apologize for doing something good.

> "But words can hurt people! Psychological research shows that harsh language can release stress hormones and trigger the same areas of the brain that process physical pain!"

There's a difference between hurt and harm. Words can hurt, in the sense of making the receiver feel bad, but feeling bad is not necessarily harmful. Sometimes people \*need\* to feel bad, because they’re doing actual harm to others, and they refuse to stop, since they're immune to logic and logic can't make them see the gravity of what they’re doing. Only emotion can. And so they need to feel bad in order to get it. Learning dark truths about our world can make people feel bad - but they need to know, because it's our duty as citizens of the Earth to know what's going on.

Knowledge hurts, but it doesn't harm.

###
What's destroying the world?

This attitude that you should never make people feel bad is what is destroying our world. Because on nearly every problem - name just about any issue that's plaguing humanity - the reason it's not getting solved is because the people who are causing it are [weaponizing boundaries](https://www.the-effing-truth.com/youre-weaponizing-boundaries-to-avoid-accountability/) against the people who are calling them out on it. Whether it's a global problem, a national problem, a local problem, or even a familial problem, the culprit in the perpetuation of that problem is the attitude that you should never, ever make people feel bad.

So in order to solve these problems, we need to start making some people feel bad. We must start telling them the truth when they don't want to hear it. We must expose their hypocrisy by teaching them knowledge that they'd rather not know. We must hold up a mirror to them when they'd rather not look in it. We must [explain conspiracy theories](https://www.the-effing-truth.com/dunning-kruger-afflicts-the-mainstream-not-the-conspiracy-theorists/) that they're too tired to listen to or don't have the bandwidth for, or consider too negative or silly or crazy - or whatever excuse they have to run away from the truth about what's happening in our world and who's responsible for it.

We're going to need to share the knowledge with them even when it makes them feel bad. We're going to have to shove truth in the faces of people who don't want it. That's the only way this world gets better, and it's going to make a lot of people feel bad.

But don't forget: This applies to you and me as well. We are going to have to feel bad for a little while too, if our own beliefs are incorrect. Before we can start telling others the truth, we first must make sure that we have it. And that requires [epistemic integrity](https://www.the-effing-truth.com/you-have-a-duty-to-be-loyal-to-truth/) on our part. Do not attempt to tell others they're wrong until you've already passed through the fire of serious interrogation of your own beliefs - which starts with [allowing others to tell you](https://www.the-effing-truth.com/the-rightest-person-in-the-world/) that you were wrong.

No one is exempt from the duty to engage this process.
